My name is April Hay and I founded my textile design brand, ‘Agate & Ayre’

in 2021 to share the passion I have for Scotland’s geology.

A visual explorer from a young age, my happiest times were spent on the beaches of the North-East of Scotland, hunting for rocks. Inspecting and feeling the differences from stone to stone, influenced by its birthplace and what it’s endured. Texture, colour and tactility are key themes throughout my work – taking a stone on its journey from being a cold, hard object to a touchable, fluid textile.

During my final year at Gray’s School of Art, I began capturing images of geological sites around Scotland. I photograph rock textures at every angle and scale. I am fascinated by microscopic imagery and how it allows us to see physical objects in an entirely new way.

I layer these images on photoshop, creating artworks, playing with dramatic contrast and bold compositions. I love dark and moody colour palettes, and the Scottish landscape is the perfect muse. Rich jewel tones and earthy greens sit alongside inky blues and teals.

Working mostly with natural fibres such as silk and bamboo, my fabrics are digitally printed using environmentally conscious inks. I then sew my fabrics, crafting pieces for your home and your wardrobe. From luxurious silk scrunchies to plush infinity scarves, decadent velvet cushion covers to bespoke apparel. Functional yet beautiful items you will love interacting with every day.

In 2021 I won ‘Launch with Scotland’s Trade Fair’ as their top new business with the potential for commercial success. My work can be found in carefully curated independent stores and galleries around the UK who share my passion for design-led, products.

Spending time outdoors is where I am at my happiest. Agate & Ayre products invite you to bring a piece of the serene Scottish outdoors home. I hope you love what I make as much as I love making it.
